Disk herniation diagnostics

A The most effective way to eliminate the pain is to discover the reason. When we see a doctor because of back pain caused by spinal health issues, most of the time they recommend some kind of medical imaging test ranging from X-Rays to MRIs. Below we put together a list containing basic information on each imaging exam.

X-Ray

What is it used for?

It provides us with an image of our skeletal structure. An X-Ray helps us understand the condition of our bones and their position. It allows doctors to determine the distance between bones, the thickness of the disk, possible fractures, cracks and dislocations.

X-Ray images are not capable of assessing the condition of soft tissue, meaning they cannot help diagnose a herniated disk.

MRI (magnetic resonance imaging)

Preparation

This examination is done in a magnetic field without the use of X-Ray technology. The patient must not wear anything made of metal, including a pacemaker.

The patient lies flat on a bed as a magnetic coil is positioned over their body. Once the coil is in place, the patient must remain motionless for the duration of the exam.

The examination

The exam itself is performed in a tunnel-like structure with a diameter of a mere 70 cm, so if the patient suffers from claustrophobia, they should inform the medical staff in advance. There is a microphone and a button inside the tunnel in case the patient wishes to ask for assistance during the examination.

The machine emits a loud buzzing noise, so patients may ask for earplugs or headphones for the duration of the exam.

The examination itself can last 20 to 40 minutes.

It is important to note that some MRI machines have a weight limit of 110-120 kg. We recommend that patients take this into consideration when making an appointment for an exam.

What is it used for?

This examination is also performed to show the condition of the spine's lower and upper (cervical) area. It is more effective in detecting soft tissue, making the changes in nerve roots and disks easier to diagnose. In certain cases, contrast dye is used to make tumorous or inflamed tissue visible. However, as it does not contain iodine, allergic reactions are rare.

This exam is done on patients who have previously undergone spinal surgery.

It may even show minor deformations that do not necessarily produce symptoms.

CT (computer tomography)

Preparation

In order to have a CT exam done, patients need to get a referral and make an appointment.

Imaging is done with the use of X-Ray technology, so children and pregnant women may only undergo a CT exam in exceptional cases.

The patient may, on certain occasions, be given contrast dye intravenously in order to make the image easier to evaluate. We recommend informing your physician of special conditions, such as diabetes, cardiovascular issues, asthma, kidney or thyroid issues.

The examination

The machine itself resembles a large doughnut with a narrow, sliding table in the middle on which the patient lies down. The exam usually lasts 10-15 minutes and is completely painless, apart from the intravenous injection. The patient must remain still and hold their breath from time to time. Instructions on when to do so are given through a microphone.

Patients should not eat 3 or 4 hours prior to the examination and should be sure to drink a lot of non-carbonated liquids.

What is it used for?

Apart from showing an image of our bones, this exam displays soft tissue as well and is mainly used to examine the lumbar area of the spine. It can diagnose a herniated disk, a bulging disk, fractures and certain types of tumors.

Exam results are usually given to the patient on CD, which is then passed on to their physician.
